JetBlue is a bit of an unknown when it comes to Alaska – they briefly served Anchorage back in 2011, but they offer year-round service from Seattle. We’ve been able to sample Mint, which is JetBlue’s lie-flat First Class product, on select transcontinental & international flights. Mint is offered seasonally on flights out of Seattle, and is on most transcon flights from New York’s JFK and most of its longer-haul flights out of Ft Lauderdale & Boston.
Solid 5 stars. You can’t beat this service! Mint is affordably priced compared to the other major airlines and offers a unique layout: the famed “throne” seat with a single seat and space on both sides of the seat giving you ample privacy, a side-by-side seat for couples, and an enhanced “front” row that includes more space & a larger tv. Newer planes have a herring-bone shape seat, facing away from the window. The Mint Seats also have a privacy door. Food is quite good, wifi fast, great tv – overall Mint is an exceptional value proposition.
I’ve been trying for a while to fly on MINT, which is JetBlue’s alleged “Business Class” product but its more like First Class. Mint is a lie-flat offering on longer haul & international routes, with a 2×2 and 1×1 layout. The seats come with a 17″ monitor, privacy door, power ports, reading light, storage cubby, and more. The seats are fairly comfortable and I enjoyed sleeping on my Seattle to Boston flight; I was surprised to see the plush bedding & amenity kit on a domestic flight, something we normally don’t see. Most airlines that fly lie-flats on domestic flights just give you the seat, no extra amenities (eg: bedding, amenity kit) to go along with it.
Sadly I was too tired to eat or take photos of the food, but I enjoyed the predeparture drink and the menu was a nice touch. Travelers have an option of items, mostly all cold, and a large assortment of drinks on board. Wifi was super fast (when I used it) and the IFE was impressive – a huge 17″ touch screen monitor would keep me busy for days. In the lie-flat position, I didn’t feel cramped at all and was able to get in a good 5 hours of sleep on my red-eye. I did shut my privacy door just to see what its like – they are not as high as the Qatar Q-Suites, but I can see the draw to these.
In terms of affordability, JetBlue tends to price Mint in the middle of the pack, but the majors are now starting to price match. I would highly recommend MINT over one of the other guys’ if given the chance.
