Copa Airlines is the national airline of Panama, offering nonstop service to 88 cities from its hub in Panama, using Boeing 737-700, -800 and brand new Max 8 & Max 9 aircraft. Copa has pretty much ‘full service’ offerings on its flights and we find them quite pleasant, punctual, and affordable. One standout, Copa still has an inflight magazine! Connecting thru Panama City to the Caribbean, Central or South America is a breeze – and you can earn United Mileage Plus miles on your Copa flight!
This one was hard – we have to give Copa 4 out of 5 stars because the airlines is reconfiguring its fleet to squeeze in another row behind the overwing exits on its 737 fleet – taking a 31″ average seat pitch down to a scrunchful 29″, which is what LATAM and Avianca are doing on its fleet. You can still get exit row and standard seats in front of the exit, as well as Economy Comfort which has about 34″ of pitch. We’re going to be on a 737-Max9 in a few days and will physically measure the last few rows of this plane to see if that fleet has also had the new slimline seats installed.
Copa is one of the few airlines that still is technically “full service” – the airline offers complimentary meal/snack service on all flights along with sodas, juice, and water. Sadly international flights do not have liquor/wine unless you are in Dreams or Businss Class. However, the food on meal flights (3.5+ hours) is quite nice, and the crews are very friendly.
The airline offers a standard seat pitch of 30 to 31″, however we are now seeing an extra row show up in the Boeing 737-800 fleet; Copa used to have just 2 types of -800s: A and B. A models were for regional flying; B models had a SUPERB First Class and Main Cabin had 31-32″ seat pitch with seatback TVs; these are being replaced with the Gogo system (JUST movies – no wifi). Economy Extra seats are keeping the seatback tvs with charging via USB.
*UPDATE: We recently flew Copa and took measurements of the seat pitch, we will publish those results shortly; however it seems that rows behind the emergency exit row at 18 are now barely a 29″/30″ seat pitch.
Seats are not your slimline or basic seats, they’re well padded and the crews sometimes have blankets hiding on the plane.
Panama connections are super easy & convenient, and the airline gets high marks for safety – Continental Airlines took a partial ownership of the airline in the 90s and took over their operations & training, and Copa has kept those same US standards and it shows.
What we like -> they are comfortable and don’t nickle & dime you as they do other airlines. You can still fly long distances comfortably and they’re very dependable. Copa is still linked to United Airlines & the Star Alliance, so you can earn and burn frequent flyer miles on the airline. You can also check out the Dreams Business Class seat here.
